Playing games significantly enhances the learning experience due to their ability to engage, motivate, and promote active learning. By incorporating elements of fun and competition, games capture students’ interest and maintain their focus, making them more receptive to new concepts and ideas. At Chestnutgator, we ensure that all our curriculums include games that facilitate learning.
For our Longitude curriculum, we began experimenting with GeoGuessr—an online geography-based game that uses Google Street View images to challenge players to identify locations around the world. Players have to place a pin on a world map based only on the imagery. For example, road signs, license plates, which side of the road the card drive on, vegetation, and even the position of the sun are all potential clues. This entertaining and educational tool improves geographic knowledge, spatial awareness, and critical thinking skills.
Our students enjoy playing GeoGuessr in class, and it is fantastic to see them collaborate, share clues, and help each other out. We typically share the screen with all the students so that everyone can participate and apply their knowledge and experiences to determine the location. By utilizing real-world applications and applying classroom knowledge, students can develop a lasting appreciation for the subject matter.
As educators, our goal is to inspire curiosity, ignite a passion for learning, and equip our students with the necessary skills to navigate the ever-evolving world with confidence and adaptability. Consider using GeoGuessr and other geography games like Seterra and stay tuned for more reviews and recommendations.
